Senior Lieutenant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Yevgeny Lunyak - Doctor of History, Professor of Nizhyn Mykola Gogol State University, Head of the Department of History of Ukraine. He became the Armed Forces immediately after the Revolution of Dignity, defending the Donetsk airport. And from the first day of a large -scale invasion of Russia in Ukraine went to defend the hometown, which was drawn to the Moscow Horde.

Now Yevgeny is fighting in eastern Ukraine. He recently visited the Armyinform and spoke about the experience of a historian who has become a participant in the viral events of the last decade, who will be written in textbooks for more than a hundred years.

- You participated in the Orange Revolution and the Dignity Revolution. Tell us about your experience, motives.

- I remember quite well in 2004, the Orange Revolution. Then I tried to come to the Maidan, wearing orange ribbons. It was a very pleasant time, and most importantly, it was a bloodless revolution. It ended with the victory of the people. And when someone says that we cannot change anything and it is impossible to overthrow the authorities, it makes no sense, then I always answer that in 2004, during the Orange Revolution, the Ukrainians defended the choice of the people - and the president became the one Who received the majority of votes.

As for the Revolution of Dignity, I very much hoped that it would also be bloodless, but unfortunately, this did not happen. He witnessed those events, many times on the Maidan. And, unfortunately, on February 18, 2014, when mass shootings began, I was there too. That day, I realized that we were falling into the turbulence phase. I realized that this would obviously be the war. Well, in fact, it happened when the occupation of Crimea began. As soon as the first "green men" appeared, I told my wife that it was a war.

And immediately in March I went to the military enlistment office-and since March 20, 2014 I served in the 1st tank brigade.

-Your motivation in 2014 and 2022 was different?

- Motivation did not differ because the main motive is the protection of Ukraine. But if in the 14th I did not know what the Ukrainian army was, because I came an absolutely civilian person, then in 2022 there was already more confidence, despite the fact that the situation was much more difficult. There was already some experience. I knew where I went and what to do. Indeed, it was quite important.

I believe that in those conditions we were able to do the maximum to stop the large -scale invasion, so as not to let the enemy move where he wanted.

- Why tank troops?

-In 2014, I could get to any troops. I am from Nizhyn, and the 1st tank brigade is stationed in the Chernihiv region. Since the military assembly was held in those units that were in the regions, we were respectively sent to the meeting to the 1st tank.

This is a very good unit. I gained a valuable experience when I served in the tank company, was the deputy commander of the company for moral and psychological support. My mouth from September 2014 to January 2015 fought in the Donbass, participated in the defense of the Donetsk airport.

At that time, many were talking about kiborgings tankers. We then commanded the battalion the legendary Adam tanker - Yevgeny Mezhevikin, Hero of Ukraine. Subsequently, a combat was returned to us, which was with us from the very beginning - Alexei Vysotsky. Those tasks that we were performing, and the airport lasted for a long time, despite the fact that the forces that the Russians threw the airport storm were very large.

When we arrived, it was the end of September. And on Putin's birthday on October 7. And the Russians tried to seize the airport before that date. It was the last fragment of Donetsk under the control of Ukraine. It was a symbol. Not so much strategically, that airport was as symbolic, as Ukraine continued to hold the part of Donetsk.

And the Russians had to knock out the airport defenders at any cost, they threw their strength and tried not to regret nothing and anyone. They chased their people in mass, just to slaughter, as they sing: "For the Tsena is not a way."

Nothing has changed now. Most combat tasks are solved by the Russian mass, more people, actually walking on corpses. This is not phraseology, they really go on corpses. And all plantings, fields along the front are littered with corpses of fallen Russians. These corpses are decomposed, and there is a fairly strong corpse smell ...

- Where are you going?

-I am the commander of the anti-aircraft missile platoon, serving in the air defense system.

- Interesting combination - historian and military. What did you see for your profession in the army? Maybe you write a diary and plan to issue then?

- I always remember the Cossack chronicles when they were both Cossacks and chronicles. For me, both the self -propelled, and Grabianka, and Velichko are to some extent examples for imitation.

Indeed, they kept diarrhea, their diaries. I do such diaries. I led them in the 14th and 15th year, I have a diary and during the present stage of the war. I make notes in order to fix important events so that they do not get lost or forgot. Because memory is an unreliable retainer.

These diaries are actually a lot of information. When you need to remember the details - opened a diary, looked when, what happened, what event. And most importantly, there is a desire that the information is preserved and perhaps it will come into a book of memories of this war, which has been going on for over ten years.

I have already written some books, but the book about the war is the hardest. Because writing about those people you knew well and who are no longer near you is the hardest thing.

-Which of your historians also became a warrior?

- When the war began, many prominent historians went to the front. Among my colleagues, first of all, I will mention Sergei Lepyavka, one of the best researchers of the Cossacks, historian of Chernihiv, who works at Nizhyn State University named after Mykola Gogol. Upon learning that Russia began a large -scale invasion, he reached Lviv to Chernihiv.

He got a day for a day, under fire, and on February 25 he was in the military enlistment office. On the same day, he received a machine gun, went to fight, got into the environment. He was barely able to get out of this environment, had shootouts with the Russians, threw grenades into Russian armored vehicles, but fortunately he managed to survive, to go to his own. This is despite the fact that the person was 62 at the time. Two of his sons are still at war.

Another colleague, Nizhyn archaeologist Ivan Kedun. In the Chernihiv region, in fact, all archaeological excavations took place with his participation. On the first day he went to the military enlistment office, took the weapon. This is despite the fact that he was not mobilized at all after a heart attack. But he went, serves, fights.

Another acquaintance, Candidate of Historical Sciences Andriy Homolyako, also received weapons on the first day, fought under Bakhmut. He got into very critical situations, but was able to survive. Several wounded from Bakhmut pulled on himself, saved the lives of these people.

I would like to mention Ivan Patrylyak, Dean of the Taras Shevchenko National University of History of Kyiv, whom I have known and respect for many years since I studied at the Taras Shevchenko PhD. He communicated with Ivan Kazimirovich when he found out that he had taken a weapon and went to defend Ukraine. For me, it is pride, honor, and the best wishes to him. Ivan Kazimirovich is a great intellectual, a sincere patriot of Ukraine, a very dedicated person.

I will mention my colleague from the Dnieper, Doctor of History, Professor Igor Kochergin, who now works at the Institute of National Memory. In the first days in the Dnieper, despite the fact that he is limited to health, he immediately went to the military enlistment office and still carries military service.

Unfortunately, one of my acquaintances, archaeologist Yuri Kovalenko from Glukhov, died ... I, of course, cannot tell about all my colleagues, because many scientists went to defend their country, although they could not do it.

- I recently passed some books "30 Wars with a Zakati neighbor" for your unit. What is the value of this edition for the foreigners?

-It is very important to carry out with fighters who are on the forefront, educational work. So I especially want to mention your book, the project of the Armyinform "30 Wars with a Zakati neighbor." Very convenient format, it is convenient to put in your pocket. There is no mobile communication in the trench. And in the breaks between shelling, when there is some reassurance, the fighter can unfold this book, read and better understand what he is fighting for.

It should always be remembered that the war goes not only in the trenches but also in the minds of people. And to break the lies and falsification of the Kremlin, which it cultivated for centuries, can only be through historical truth. Such books are motivated and inspired by victory.

In the army, indeed, there is a lack of ideological training, there is a lack of educational preparation, so that people understand better with whom we are fighting, for which we are fighting for. And what will happen if we lose. And the book "30 Wars with a Zakati neighbor" answers these questions.

- Tell us what happened in Kruty at the end of February 2022. There is such information that we managed to take revenge on the events of 100 years ago.

- We were on the outskirts of Nizhyn, which goes to the side of Kruty, kept the defense there. By the way, the fact that the enemy did not enter Nizhyn then happened in many respects thanks to again the feat of the heroes of Kruty, only the heroes of 2022.

Men from the village of Kruty made large blockages of trees that blocked the road Russian tanks. When the invaders came to Nizhyn, they struck on these rubble, it was difficult to clear them, after all, they were afraid to do it. However, they were stuck in Kruty.

It gave time to our artillery to be able to work and clearly work on this group. I heard and even saw outbreaks of the technique that exploded in the Russians. But it is difficult for me to estimate the scale, because then we had neither drones nor the communication that is now.

But in fact, I realized that an important event was happening. As far as I know, the enemy's losses were very significant, they say more than 200 invaders were killed during shelling. The group that was in Kruty was completely destroyed. Indeed, it is nice to know that it was under Kruty that we won such a significant victory.

- The Russians did not go to Nizhyn. Where did they go further?

- Yes, then they went around Nizhyn. Because just on the perimeter of the city on the first day the defense began to form. On February 25, we had the first battle under Nizhyn. The Russians tried to go into the city, fired at us. We tried to fire them. They were frightened and did not move further. But, unfortunately, their shelling was killed and injured. Because only with my own car, I removed three dead defenders, and then we took out the wounded - about four or five people. I think there were more of them.

- Your victory recipe. What do you need in Ukraine?

- Now Ukraine needs to withstand. When a fight occurs, the one who is more hardy. Even a person who can be weaker physically but stronger in spirit can win. I think that Ukraine should stand first. And we are holding up now.

We should not forget about those people who are at the front because they are really difficult for them. Especially when we hear the slogans about "tired of war." What to say about people who have been at war for 10 years, what to talk about people who are on the front for more than two years, without weekends, without rest. What is "tired of war" is better to ask them.

I understand, not just everyone now. And those who are in the rear during constant anxiety, rocket dangers, bombardment. I sympathize with those who have losses. It is the most horrifying when loved ones, especially children, die. But our society must be strong. We have to be strong, because this is the only way to achieve a dreamy victory ...

I was a younger lieutenant, I won the officer at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. My military accounting specialty is an information and propaganda provision of army.

Subsequently, colleagues joked that I was a rare occasion when a military accounting specialty coincides with the position (laughs).

I asked one major, "How many of us?" He replied that 400. I thought that 400 thousand in 5 million Kiev was decent ... But he specified that we were only 400 people in the brigade. That's when I was not on my own.

Subsequently, the commander ordered to join the crew of the brigade. I asked: how to unfold? To which he received the answer: "You will go outside now, and you will understand everything."

I go out to the porch - and I feel on the stage of the concert of the band "Ocean Elsa". I stood in front of me a sea of people: to the left, on the right ... just a sea of people. It was February 24.

The wide -mentioned avenue is filled with people - and they have no end and edge. As soon as they saw us, they began to shout: "Give a weapon!" We replied that we do not give weapons, but mobilize to the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

After these words, some people dispersed and some remained. People began to self -organize: they created their mouths, chose their mouth, and divided into platoons. We planted them on buses, brought them into battalions.

In those days, I realized that in any incomprehensible situation, Ukrainians began to build Zaporizhzhya Sich: they began to dig trenches, pulled bags from somewhere, filled them with sand, made barricades. There was a constant movement around. In my eyes, people built Zaporizhzhya Sich.

Did not this enthusiasm go out from the Ukrainians - to build Zaporizhzhya Sich - for two years of a large -scale war?

I began to feel that there was such a mood from people that we had already won when we rejected the Muscovites from Kiev, from Kyiv and Chernihiv, when people began to return from evacuation. After one business trip to the east, I returned to Kiev. And I realized that I was driving from one city, and I returned to a completely different dimension. I was shocked: where is the time machine where I missed this portal?

Then there were some mixed feelings: on the one hand, we need to return to a peaceful lifestyle, and on the other, we have never encountered that. We are not a hybrid war, not a conflict within one area or one area. It is a large -scale aggression when you cannot feel safe anywhere, because the whole territory of Ukraine is fired ...

And Ukrainians are the world Olympic champions to adapt to new circumstances: we have learned to live in the conditions of war and restrictions that we impose martial law. And we must admit that Ukrainians are strong when they go beyond the comfort zone.

"A contract system with transparent rules of the game is what can help us"

With regard to the current situation with mobilization, it seems to me that it is currently needing an honest dialogue with society. On the occasion of Volunteer's Day, there were the following words in the address of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine: "Ukraine exists as long as those who are ready to defend it." This is the base. These words should be written on billboards. And this is what every Ukrainian needs to be aware of.

But, in my personal opinion, we may need to come to the practice of contracts: a year or two. If you think as a manager, what do we have? There is a target audience - those who have not yet found their place in the defense of Ukraine.

Definitely - Ukraine needs mobilization and new people. Because there are military people who have been fighting for 10 years, and for many of them it has become a way of life, a habit.

In addition, technologies should also come into assistance to Ukraine. We are leading a war that no country has waged. We wage a war with a country where 140 million people live.

They are actually a powerful staff reserve, and therefore, the mobilization resource - as we would like to do so. Even an unobtrusive person with a machine gun is always much more dangerous than just an unobtrusive person. Even an unobtrusive person with a stick is much more scary than just a person. As they say, a good word and gun do more than just a good word.

So, theoretically, we are opposed to 140 million katsaps with sticks (at least) or with automatic machines.

So, 100 years ago, one of the reasons for the victory of the Russian Federation over Ukraine was that Russia simply threw Ukraine with corpses. We were not able to grind the number of katsaps that they had thrown here, the Russians had simply a bottomless mobilization resource.

Yes, the UNR performed mobilization, but first, this mobilization was insufficient. And secondly, you should not forget that international sanctions were imposed against the UNR. This was not fashion about it, but against us France, the United Kingdom has imposed sanctions, because, according to the countries of the former Entente, we were opponents, signing a peace treaty with the Triple Alliance. And our allies became Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, Bulgaria-who were opponents of the Entente.

The Entente was regarded as the UNR chose for her enemies. But the Entente did not hear us in our struggle for independence, and supported our enemies - white Russian chauvinists who wanted to restore the Russian Empire.

So in 1919 we did not have international support. Petliura launched a powerful cultural diplomacy, it was a super -manager project, but it did not save the situation. In 1919, Ukraine purchased weapons, uniforms, medicines, but they also remained in Romania on the railway, in echelons, as "sub -". And Ukraine has received almost nothing.

And we need to learn these lessons. Yes, now we have international support, but in a hundred years Russia has not invented anything new, and they are fighting with us the same methods: they throw in corpses, lead information war, propaganda against us.

The Ukrainians 100 years ago "went to Russian propaganda and populism: Lenin came up with the most simple populist slogans:" soldiers - peace, factories - workers, peasants - land. But everyone went to it because it was a supergly that everyone liked.

What is going on now? Russian propaganda launches absolutely simple and false slogans - and Ukrainians believe them. They are more willing to believe anonymous telegrams, but do not believe their own power. They will spread any rumors - and in this we are also the world Olympic champions.

But we need to understand that through these rumors, the enemy leads an offensive not only on the Avdiivsky, Kupyansky or Novopavlovsky direction. It keeps a constant offensive in the information direction. Ukrainians just need to learn the basic rules of information hygiene. This is vital.

If you have psychological irritation, insomnia, pathological fear, and you can not explain the nature of this - therefore, you are informationally infected. I advise my friends to put less on social networks - and people change in a week.

They are healing! They simply do not know about the existence of srans that are carved on the network.

About the new Russian information special operations, I sometimes find out from my mom who calls me and asks if it is true. And I understand that the Russian Ipsius got to mom.

- I will start with what I said earlier - there is no alternative to mobilization, since it is the only legitimate way to preserve and build up the combat capabilities of defense forces at a level that guarantees the repeling of the Russian occupier. Therefore, our defense forces need not only complementing but also rotation. - How much do you think the recruiting system to the Armed Forces will be able to help quality conscription?

- The recruiter system was conceived as the basis of the Armed Forces before the Great War of the Russian Federation against Ukraine in 2022. The main arguments in favor of such a decision were that the army was completed on a voluntary basis in accordance with a conscious independent decision, aspirations, qualifications and capabilities of the person, his desire to realize himself in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In this way, it was planned to accelerate the introduction of NATO standards, in particular personnel management, filling the entire contract term solely with improving professional skills and preventing the manifestations of relapses of Soviet region, when combat training was replaced by the performance of economic work.

The whole course of the large -scale war only confirmed the correctness of such a decision. After all, even such a cruel and bloody aggressor as the Russian Federation, which had the advantage of the forces and means, prompt initiative for their use, was unable to break the resistance and defeat the highly motivated, patriotic -minded Ukrainians and Ukrainian women, which tens of thousands, since February 2022, voluntarily. They replenished the defense forces and stood up for Ukraine.

Therefore, we consider recruiting not only as the most perfect and effective form of conscription, completing the defense forces, but also as an increase in the capabilities of each military unit, the main condition for maintaining, creating and cultivating glorious combat traditions, maintaining law and order, forming a new generation of command composition of different levels.

- But some experts say that the army should fight, and recruiting issues, they say, should be engaged in other structures.

- Ideally, probably, if the war did not prevent the introduction of a full system of accounting for military personnel, to bring to the full capacity of the Tax Code, the information campaign for recruitment.

However, the realities of the war require current challenges and threats in such a way as to win the enemy, and in this response we came to the fact that the brigades launched our own recruiting campaign. During their existence, they have proven themselves positively. Therefore, I think it is not necessary to give up this form in favor of another that has not yet been created.

In addition, in NATO countries, the authorized structures of species and troops also carry out their own powerful information recruiting campaign to involve potential specialists in military service, focus on motivational packages that are trying to unify with the proposals of commercial structures.

In my opinion, the involvement of military units in the recruiting process is such a new form of civil control over a military organization. After all, it is on the basis of why some units stand for those who want to and others have a critical attitude that you can promptly draw conclusions and take personnel measures.

Please note that the negative of Ukrainians is not the demanding of commanders or a difficult training process of combat training or military service itself, and above all - a violation of the period of preparation before sending to the advanced, its saturation with combat training.

Unfortunately, there are some cases that are related to the lack of professional skills of some commanders of different levels in the management of subordinate personnel, communication style, responding to the difficulties of military existence of subordinates, etc.

- What should be done to make the recruiting system further spread?

- First of all, it is a guaranteed fulfillment of the terms of the contract, and primarily on the issues that I spoke above - the term, the content of the preparation, the level of security, the conditions of military service, the receipt of the military service.

Secondly, it is a daily won the battle for people's trust, the trust that the military department, the deputy corps, respond in a timely manner and draw the right conclusions from every problem that has been made for objective or subjective reasons in a particular unit.

We live in conditions where the enemy constantly forms anti -Ukrainian reality, plays fakes about the situation at the front, mobilization and other measures taken to strengthen our defense capability.

These are realities that cannot be ignored and which require constant improvement of communication with society, conscripts.

In this process, the role of commanders, representatives of units, who can more actively participate in interviews with potential recruiters, meetings, speeches in the media, and thus remove warnings of military service, their families against military service.

It should be remembered that we will not say about one or another problem, especially that has become widespread on social networks, instantly tell the enemy with anti -Ukrainian rhetoric, or think of an average citizen at his discretion.

Third, there should be films, books, socio-political, and cultural measures on the state, which are designed to keep the authority of military service and military uniform at the highest level. We have only a culture to pass the military in queues, and during a meeting on the streets, in public places-to express the words of gratitude for military service.

- The second version of the mobilization bill has been considered in the Committee since early February. In your opinion, when and in what form can it be transferred to the Verkhovna Rada?

- The duration of consideration is due not only to the number of editions, the number of which exceeds four thousand, but also their scale, that is, the number of legislation they touch. In addition, the amendments are considered with the participation of representatives of social groups whose interests affect these amendments. To date, more than 3518 edits have already been considered.

The severity of the discussion is that all participants in the consideration of amendments refer to their own 2 years of experience of mobilization during a full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war, and it, unfortunately, does not always contain a positive assessment. For example, in some regions, close cooperation of local authorities and CCCs is maintained, in others - on the contrary, it is absent, which has a negative effect on mobilization processes.

There were no less acute discussions when the question of what category and why should be reservated.

In general, everyone is aware of the need to strengthen the defense forces, but not everyone is ready to divide responsibility for extremely unpopular decisions and to recognize the priority of Article 65 of the Constitution, which defines the duty of the country's citizens to protect Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity.

In view of the above, it is difficult to predict which of the drafting of the draft law after consideration by the Committee will remain and which will be excluded or modified.
